Microsoft on Monday night posted a release candidate of Service Pack 5 for NT 4.0 on its Web site.
One user who downloaded the software and installed it said it is running and nothing on his system has crashed or been adversely effected.
"It appears to fix Y2K stuff and security manager bugs, but I haven't got into fine details," said Stu Sjouwerman, executive vice president of Sunbelt Software Distribution.
Sjouwerman advised in his NT newsletter that users should make an emergency repair disk and do appropriate backup. He advised that the Service Pack should not be run on a production system.
