The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) has adopted new recommendations for the use of generic immunosuppressive medications by solid organ transplant recipients, according to an article in the February 1999 issue of the American Journal of Kidney Disease. Medical experts, patient representatives, and government officials developed the updated safeguards at a recent NKF conference held in response to the transplant community's concerns about the approval process for generic medications and about substitution practices. The topic also is timely because several generic immunosuppressive agents are expected to become available in the near future.
