The National Electrical Code, or NEC,Ý is the most widely used code in this country. It is adopted in some form in all 50 states as well as U.S. territories. However, in spite of its widespread acceptance, the NEC has never been easy to use. It has read like a book-length version of a deed to a property or lease for an apartment.
Like it or not, a formal structure and strict wording are necessary aspects of the Code because it is commonly adopted as local law. The good news is that the 1999 revision contains substantial improvements in both presentation format and arrangement of content.
