May 16 -- On average, students at South Dakota public universities outshine their peers nationwide, according to tests of college juniors.
But the people who teach those students in South Dakota historically are at the bottom of the pay scale nationwide. That might be changing.
Faculty raises at the state's public universities averaged 7.2 percent for fiscal 1999. "That has already made us more competitive in filling some slots we couldn't fill before," especially in the areas of science, computers and math, said Curtis Jones of Britton, member of the South Dakota Board of Regents.
