Grapefruit juice could block the uptake of cyclosporine as well as medications used to treat cancer, hypertension, heart disease, and allergies, according to a new study done at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF).
Previous studies have showed that grapefruit juice improves absorption of some orally administered drugs, such as HIV protease inhibitors and calcium-channel blockers. This occurs because the juice inactivates the intestine's main drug-metabolizing enzyme CYP3A4, thus protecting the medication from being destroyed before it is absorbed.
