May 18 -- Renovating Fenway Park is clearly impractical and preservationists' goals are better accomplished by building a new ballpark and maintaining some of the old edifice just across the street, Red Sox management and members of their development team said yesterday.
But a grass-roots group seeking to refurbish the old park, originally constructed in 1912, continued to push for a thorough review of their proposal to renovate the existing stadium, and they have gained a powerful ally -- House Speaker Thomas M. Finneran.
