May 17 -- As the booming economy draws diners into pricey restaurants, some upscale New Jersey eateries say they feel like the corner table near the kitchen.

They offer comparable food, and their costs are as high or higher than their New York City counterparts. But they can't fetch the same prices for their creations.

Customers willing to splurge in Manhattan, chefs say, expect to pay friendly neighborhood prices when dining here.

That has forced better restaurants to hold the line on menu prices, even as demand for some gourmet ingredients such as foie gras and truffles have sent those costs ...
