Driving to Cowra the road
is a quick black snake that darts right,
then left, the gum trees' humble shade
on either side is deep blue:
tall grasses crowd the space
around them, crowd the bitumen too.
On a sudden rise, where paddocks
stretch for miles, someone has brushed
each dent and ridge with violet wash,
valleys into which we swoop
fill with a purple haze
and houses on the hilltops,
