The year 2000 problem has been widely reported. The nature of the problem comes from the ambiguity associated with storing the year in a computer using only the last two digits. Depending on the way in which the computer was originally programmed, this ambiguity may be resolved as implying the year 2000, implying the year 1900, or simply causing an overflow error in the computer--which will then not be able to handle the date at all.
