The job of managing overcrowded urban classrooms, which are often made up of large numbers of socially and economically disadvantaged students, is quite different from managing suburban classrooms. Yet, few secondary teacher education programs offer urban classroom management training. And once new teachers enter the urban school, debilitating conditions may prevent them from developing effective classroom management skills. In this article, I offer some humanistic strategies for effectively managing urban secondary classrooms.
