May 20 -- Schering-Plough Corp., fighting to protect the $2 billion market for its popular allergy medicine Claritin, is pressing Congress to support legislation that could help prolong the drug's patent, set to expire in 2002.
The Madison-based company is meeting sharp resistance, however, from generic drug makers, many of which are eager to crack the monopoly status of Claritin and other pharmaceuticals facing patent expiration.
"This is a prime example of a brand-name drug company trying to get more profit from a drug than it deserves," said Carol Cox, a spokeswoman for Barr Laboratories in Pomona, N.Y.
