May 21 -- TEENS BARRED FROM RISKY JOBS: During a recent local investigation of wage and hour violations in the roofing industry, investigators from the U.S. Department of Labor were driving from one job site to another when they spotted what appeared to be a teen-ager working on a saw at a concrete company.
The boy turned out to be 16. Allowing someone that young to operate a power-driven saw is a violation of wage and hour laws, said Shirley Gardner, district director of the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor in Houston.
