Born in London on January 22, 1561, Francis Bacon was a son of English court official Sir Nicholas Bacon and his wife, Ann. He studied Aristotelian philosophy at Cambridge and, like his father, made his career at court. But he became fascinated with technological developments, largely through association with Bernard Palissy--the potter, public lecturer, and advocate of hands-on learning--while on a visit to Paris in 1577. He rose to the position of lord chancellor of England in 1618, but court intrigues led to his conviction on charges of corruption in 1621. He died on April 9, 1626.
