Getting the best from teams requires work on the teams themselves.
Just as Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney cried "Let's put on a show!" to solve problems in their 1940s movie lives, many businesses cry "Let's build teams!" to attack problems ranging from low productivity to poor morale, high costs and missed deadlines.
Employee teams intuitively seem to be a great idea and are certainly a growing trend. Research at the Center for the Study of Work Teams (CSWT) at the University of North Texas indicates that by 2000, 80 percent of Fortune 500 organizations will have half of their employees on teams.
