The protection of amines as their alkyloxycarbonyl derivatives is widely used in peptide synthesis. Some of the most common alkyloxycarbonyl N-protecting groups employed for the protection of amino acids include: benzyloxycarbonyl (Z or Cbz) t-butoxycarbonyl (Boc), 9-fluorenyl-methoxycarbonyl (Emoc) and-4-nitro benzyloxy-carbonyl. These protecting groups are often introduced on amino acids or peptides with alkyl chloroformates, provided they are easily available and sufficiently stable to be safely handled.
