The Gambia Daily Observer newspaper bannered the stow, "A True Homecoming," citing the importance of George Haley's returning to the country as U.S. ambassador.
The welcome left little doubt that the new ambassador would become a very popular American on the continent. Already, the brother of the late Roots author Alex Haley has been invited to visit several African nations in the new spirit of cooperation.
Roots traced the Haley clan's lineage to the Republic of The Gambia located on the continent's West tip.
