DETROIT _ One of the nation's biggest breast cancer prevention studies was started Tuesday to answer the question: Can healthy women with a higher risk of breast cancer take a pill and not get the disease?
An estimated 29 million American women have a stronger chance of getting breast cancer, the most common tumor in women.
The study will be conducted at 400 North American medical centers, including nearly 20 in Michigan. Some 22,000 women who have completed menopause will receive one of two drugs to see if they remain free of cancer. It also will measure side effects to determine benefits or problems with either drug.
