Four Black Chicago men who were wrongfully convicted of murdering a couple nearly two decades ago recently won a $36 million settlement from Cook County (IL) in what their lawyers say is the biggest settlement ever reached in a civil rights lawsuit over police misconduct.

The four men sued Cook County, claiming the sheriffs officers who investigated the 1978 case were racists who hid evidence that would have helped the defense and ignored leads pointing to the real killers.

It is believed to be the largest amount of damages awarded for police misconduct in U.S. history.
