May 27 -- EDISON, N.J. -- Instead of just selling kitchen cabinets in its stores, Tops Appliance City has bought the outfit that makes the woodwork.

Tops announced yesterday it plans to buy The Kitchen Place, the company that already stocks the appliance store's kitchen center. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the deal is expected to close in June.

"During the time that Tops has been working with The Kitchen Place, we have found that sales of kitchen cabinets provide a natural synergy with the selling process of high-end major appliances," said Richard Jones, Tops' chief executive officer.
