Drought conditions are growing worse in northern and central Mexico, prompting the federal government to declare a disaster emergency in at least seven states. The northern third of Mexico has been drier than normal for at least five years, but a lack of rain since the second half of 1998 has reduced water in many reservoirs to dangerously low levels. Some estimates of the damage from this year's extreme dry conditions surpass those for last year's drought, which some considered the worst since 1928 (see SourceMex, 1998-08-05).
