The word nosocomial is derived from 2 Greek root words, "noso" meaning disease and "komein" meaning to care for. Therefore, nosocomial infections are those that result while being hospitalized for another medical condition. For purposes of reporting and surveillance, nosocomial infections are those arising after 48 hours of hospitalization and due to exposure to other patients, hospital personnel or from various sources.
