Jun. 2 -- MIAMI -- For years, South Florida has fueled its economy with booming sales to Latin America. Now, the action is coming from imports instead.
South Florida sold less goods overseas and bought more from abroad during the first quarter of 1999, as the roaring U.S. economy outpaced growth in Latin America and other key trading regions around the world.
Exports from South Florida fell nearly 3 percent to $7 billion, while imports jumped almost 11 percent to $5.3 billion, compared with the same quarter last year. That trimmed South Florida's much-touted trade surplus to $1.7 billion for the quarter, ...
