Cerebral palsy is a group of impairments whose common thread is an "insult," or injury, to the developing brain. The injury occurs in the womb or soon after birth. Damage is not progressive (it does not continuously worsen), but the manner in which it expresses itself may change as a child matures and attempts to develop new skills. Often the effect is on a child's movement, one of the basic functions of the central nervous system.
