High in the Himalayas the snows melted early this year, catching the Indian military unprepared. By the time the troops were ready to return to high-altitude summer bunkers on the Kashmir border, they were in for a rude shock. About 1,000 guerrillas had taken advantage of the early thaw to sneak over from the Pakistani side, grab the bunkers--and lie in ambush for the Indians in their own vertiginous fortifications.
