The author first looks at polyesters, then turns his attention to other thermosets.
A review of thermosets should start with the polyester family, which includes the unsaturated derivatives, the alkyds, and the allyls. All of these cure by addition, i.e., they give off no byproducts during cure.
THE UNSATURATEDS
An unsaturated polyester resin system consists of a resin formed by the partial reaction of a polybasic alcohol with a saturated or unsaturated polybasic acid, and a monomer, which dissolves that resin and acts as the crosslinking or thermosetting agent.
