Jun. 9 -- FREMONT, Calif. -- Maybe there's something to this local telephone competition after all, based on a tiny but growing beachhead AT&T and TCI have established in the East Bay.
AT&T has been able to woo away hundreds of Pacific Bell customers in Fremont, according to according to people familiar with the situation. The defections have been going on since early May, when AT&T began offering local phone service delivered over TCI's cable television wires.
AT&T made the service available through a market test of local services the company is conducting in Fremont.
