Summer job: Garbage collector
Mike Duggan, deputy Wayne County executive, says his most memorable summer job was in 1976, collecting garbage in Southfield.
"I was 17, just finished my senior year in high school," Duggan says. Ed McNamara, then the mayor of Livonia, referred Duggan, already his protege, to a waste-collection company called Commercial Removal.
"I replaced a guy who fell off the truck in the rain and broke his arm," Duggan says. "When I showed up for work, they were horrified at my size." Duggan was 5 foot 6 inches and weighed about 160.
