The best island retreats are places where nature hasn't been subdued. There should be a little luxury, plenty of water views and the camaraderie of kindred souls.
Or, as entrepreneur John Oram likes to say, "I live in paradise and vote in America."
Oram, 45, who immigrated to the United States from Iraq in the 1960s, bought Bob-Lo Island for $2.5 million in April 1994.
Technically, the island is part of Amherstburg, Ontario, where Oram, a U.S. citizen, had moved with his family in 1992. But Bob-Lo's heritage as an amusement park has made it property of the memories of thousands of Detroiters who traveled by boat for a day in the sun.
