Mention the Northwest Passage to most Canadians and most likely their minds go back to the history lessons in which they first heard of explorers such as Martin Frobisher, Henry Hudson, or William Baffin. The attempts of those and later explorers to find a short route to Asia are part of Canadian history. The land north of the forty-ninth parallel, except for Alaska, is regarded as Canadian territory right up to the North Pole. This is a normal assumption in Canada.
