Had I but known, that rainy day in May as I sat in a refurbished but still tradition-soaked Coolidge Auditorium listening to a day-long succession of papers to which I - fatigued and famished - could add only a few casual comments and an inadequate expression of gratitude and appreciation, that I would be reconfronted by those disquisitions along with an at least stern suggestion that I respond or, at least, comment more than casually, I would have spent that day wondering what I could say after I'd said I'm really beholden.
