Aseptic processing of low-acid particulates fails to catch on despite FDA approval.

When the FDA in 1997 approved a process developed by Tetra Pak for aseptic packaging of low-acid particulates, the news was hailed as a technological leap forward that could usher in a new generation of products.

But more than 18 months later, the expected rush to embrace the newly approved technology hasn't materialized, and it's not certain when or whether it will. Possible reasons range from lack of market appeal to lack of equipment to facilitate the new process.
