It was late in the afternoon before someone noticed that the water splashing around the engines was no longer being cleared by the bilge pump. Soon, bone-chilling water swept over the transom and threatened to swamp us if something wasn't done in a hurry. Capt. Jim Sagerholm cut the anchor line loose and rushed to get the 23-foot Mako on plane while I dove into the water-filled stem and plucked pieces of chum from the pump.
