Jun. 17 -- The Tennessee Valley Authority, which was formed 67 years ago to harness the power of the Tennessee River, has committed to try to also harness more of its power from the coal fields within its service territory.

TVA Chairman Craven Crowell Wednesday approved a $300 million contract to buy up to 12 million tons of Kentucky coal over the next six years. The new contract expands the amount of Kentucky coal TVA will buy from AEI Resources Inc. by up to 3 million tons and extends the use of Tennessee Valley coal well into the next century.
