Hospital staff members may be able to reduce the number and duration of sudden episodes of delirium in at-risk elderly patients by using a new clinical approach, according to a March 3, 1999, press release from the National Institute on Aging (NIA). The study, which was funded by NIA and conducted at the Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, was the first large-scale clinical trial targeted toward the prevention of delirium--a condition that is prevalent among hospitalized elderly patients and is a frequent contributor to hospital complications and deaths, according to the release.
