Alexei Vassiliev's book is an updated version of his early work in Russian, which has already been translated into Arabic. This new volume is more comprehensive; it includes new material and brings the story to the 1990s. It covers the social, political and economic history of those parts of the Arabian Peninsula which in 1932 became Saudi Arabia. The material is presented in two parts. Part I covers the period between 1744 and 1818, the second part deals with the consolidation of the Saudi state after the First World War.
