Colon cancer, the second-leading cancer killer in the United States, can be prevented by regular screenings, exercise and avoiding red meat, says a report issued yesterday.
"Colon cancer is a leading killer in the U.S., but it doesn't have to be," said Dr. Graham Colditz, director of education for the Harvard School of Public Health's center for cancer prevention.
He said that 70 percent of all cases of colon cancer could be prevented by these steps. The disease strikes about 150,000 Americans each year.
