His father's life, that distant September, was bordered by dark, terrible words. Each time the ancient phone in his grandmother's apartment would ring, the son watched as his father climbed the stairs to push words like "malignant hypertension" and "ruptured optic nerves" into the receiver.
All he knew for sure was that his mother would never see again. The boy had just turned 9. Imbedded in his memory of that fall are two moments when his father was called to the phone to say yes to "emergency surgery."
