Leading US researchers recently called for a doubling in vitamin C's Recommended Daily Allowance to 120mg and a maximum intake of 1g a day. However, another recent review suggests that maximum doses four times higher than this may be safe for healthy people. The average daily intake of vitamin C in the USA is currently estimated at around 90mg/day, mostly from orange juice, other citrus fruits, tomatoes and potatoes.
Writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association (1999;281:1415-23), researchers from the US National Institutes of Health note that "extensive biochemical, molecular, epidemiological and clinical data" have emerged since the last vitamin C ...
