It is always important in life to know where you are going. The insight is especially relevant for the ecumenical movement, and it is precisely this question that I see behind the theme of this conference.
The modern ecumenical movement is on the threshold of the second century of its existence. Thus, it is certainly appropriate that it be re-examined and evaluated at this moment in time, to ask where has it been and, more crucially, to probe what its goal is. When the variable history and multiplicity of dimensions of the movement are considered, we can perceive both the challenge and the necessity of such an examination.
