Jun. 25 -- Let's restore the original, wild Big Muddy -- at least a bit, says one U.S. senator.
The dams, the levees, the channeling of the Missouri River have all served a purpose, says U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey, a Nebraska Democrat. But wouldn't it be nice, Kerrey asked Thursday, to have a river to fish in, to canoe in, to picnic by.
Kerrey on Thursday introduced a legislative package of river reforms -- the Missouri River Valley Improvement Act -- that, if approved, would allocate $320 million over the next 10 years to improve recreation and restore fish and wildlife habitat along the length of the Missouri.
