Article: Lifting of embargo gives life to economy.(Burundi)

The lifting in April, of the regional embargo imposed on Burundi some two and a half years ago has come as a huge relief to the badly crippled economy. The embargo had been imposed by Burundi's neighbours in an effort to force the military, which had taken over power on July 25 1996, to restore civilian rule.

The embargo affected all oil imports and all Burundian exports. It also restricted land and air links, although a few restrictions were lifted in April 1997, under pressure from UN agencies, to allow the transit of food aid, medicines and some agricultural products.
