Pornographic footprints stored in a computer was only the tip of the iceberg. Long before the salacious Internet hits turned up on Erik Payne Butler's office laptop at the Pine Street Inn, many staffers believed the strange marriage between the Inn and its self-named "president" was already doomed.
Butler was picked three years ago to succeed Richard Ring, the former executive director whose 27-year stewardship took the Inn from being a bare-bones way station for alcoholic men to being the largest homeless shelter in New England. He arrived with virtually no experience in the field of homelessness.
From the outset, sources say, the signs were not good.
