Ceradyne Inc. (Nasdaq/NM:CRDN) announced that it received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the Department of Defense for the development of a ceramic "Lightweight Armor Solution," an advanced protection system for military vehicles capable of sustaining multiple battlefield hits.

The company is developing its new armor system for the U.S. Marine Corps' Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV).
