Eczema Sufferers Urged to Enjoy the Great Outdoors this Summer
The summer months can pose a challenge for the more than 15 million Americans who suffer from atopic dermatitis, the most common form of eczema. Eczema is characterized by dry, itchy, scaly skin with rashes on the cheeks, and redness and inflammation behind the elbows and knees, as well as on the face, eyelids, neck, hands, and wrists. Flare-ups can be caused by irritants such as soaps, solvents, chlorinated and salt water and other drying compounds, and worsened by sudden temperature changes. Corticosteroids, a mainstay of therapy, are generally recommended during periods of acute flare-ups.
