Almost as soon as physicians began prescribing the newly approved fat- blocking drug Xenical, it made history as one of the fastest-selling prescription drugs ever introduced, bested only by Viagra in the last six years. The $4 to $5 a day cost doesn't seem to be dis- couraging anyone. Clearly, Americans are serious about losing weight.
But will they? Probably not as much as they hope to. Thomas Wadden, Ph.D., the director of the Weight and Eating Disorders Program at the Uni- versity of Pennsylvania, calls Xenical's effectiveness "modest, yet helpful" in losing 10% of body weight in the first year. But it can't do it all by itself.
