For a variety of reasons, some adolescents, including those with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), are vegetarians. Nurse practitioners who care for them should be familiar with this dietary option to provide guidance, assess well-being in terms of growth and nutrition, and manage the diabetes to maintain glycemic control and prevent long-term complications.
