(CW Henderson Publisher www.newsfile.com) -- The epsilon-4 allele of the apolipoprotein-E gene is linked to severe psychosis in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, a new study suggests.
Unlike some previous reports, however, the new findings show no association between the allele and depression in AD.
"Among our large sample of community-dwelling AD patients, the epsilon-4 allele alters the risk for symptoms of psychosis after the effects of age, gender, education, and level of cognitive deficits are controlled," wrote Dylan G.
