Jun. 29 -- The recording industry on Monday moved to protect its control of music online, announcing design specifications for portable digital music players to thwart piracy.
For consumers, the announcement means that record companies, which have shied away from releasing music by popular artists online for fear of piracy, may make more of that content available. And it opens the door for more experimental ways of selling, purchasing and pricing music, for example, by offering single songs or albums, or a combination.
