HARRISBURG, Pa., July 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge today released the first installment of his landmark, four-year, $100 million "Read-to-Succeed" initiative to make sure all Pennsylvania children can read by the time they finish third grade.
Gov. Ridge said Pennsylvania schools in 50 counties will receive nearly $19 million in "Read-to-Succeed" grants to strengthen their reading programs and help ensure children are able to read.
"If our children can't read, they won't succeed. It's as simple as that," Gov. Ridge said. "Reading is the building block upon which everything else they'll learn is based.
