DirecTv Inc. [GMH] took an end run around the rest of the satellite industry by striking a deal with the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) last week to gain heightened clout for its views when satellite TV legislation is expected to be taken up by House-Senate conferees later this month.
The key motivating factor for DirecTv is to win passage of legislation that would allow it to begin offering local channels via satellite as soon as possible to a potential audience of 50 million U.S. TV households, company officials said.
